Alexandr Vondra

Alexandr " Saša " Vondra ( born August 17, 1961 in Prague) is a Czech politician and Minister (ODS ).

Life

Vondra in 1985 his PhD at the Charles University in Prague list in Geography. From 1990 to 1992 he was a foreign policy advisor to Václav Havel, then to 1997, Deputy Foreign Minister of the newly formed Czech Republic, 1997-2001 Czech Ambassador to the United States.

From 2001 to 2002 he was a government representative for the preparation of the NATO summit in Prague in 2002. From 2003 to 2004 he was a lecturer for the German Marshall Fund in Prague and in 2004 was " Professor of Euro -Atlantic relations," New York University in Prague branch. 2004 to 2006 he was an Austrian CEO of Dutko Worldwide, a U.S. consulting firm in Prague.

From 4th September 2006 to January 9, 2007 Foreign Minister Vondra was under the bourgeois government of Mirek Topolanek (ODS ), after which he was Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs until the fall of the center-right government Mirek Topolánek II in March 2009.

In October 2006, Vondra was elected in the constituency Litoměřice in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. In the Senate elections in 2012, he could not defend his position. With 3rd place in the first round behind the candidate of the CSSD and the KSČM him even failed to move into the second round.

In the recent center-right government of Prime Minister Petr Necas (ODS ) Vondra was since July 2010 Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic. He said on November 28, 2012 his resignation with effect from 7 December 2012. He justified the withdrawal with his clearly missed re-election in the elections to the Senate in early October, 2012. Indeed, there were frequent calls for his resignation earlier against Vondra in connection with the award overpriced government contracts.
