Alexandra of Yugoslavia

Alexandra of Greece ( born March 25, 1921 in Athens, Greece, † 30 January 1993 in East Sussex, England) was since 1944 the wife of King Peter II of Yugoslavia and thus for a year Queen of Yugoslavia in exile.

Life

Alexandra was born on March 25, 1921 to the world when her father King Alexander I of Greece was already dead. As her mother Aspasia Manos belonged to the ancient Greek nobility, she had direct and sole member of the Greek Royal Family Greek ancestors.

As a result of hostilities between her father, the very well liked among the people of King Alexander I, and its friendly German father Constantine I and continuing against her mother, she was shunned by parts of the royal family.

On March 20, 1944 she married King Peter II of Yugoslavia in exile in London. Just a year later she gave birth on July 27, 1945 their only child, Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia, in suite 212 at London Claridge Hotel. As a Yugoslavian king must be born by law on Yugoslav territory, this suite was declared by the British government for a day to Yugoslav territory. After the end of World War II Peter II was deposed still in exile in England, but never thanked from.

She died on January 30, 1993 in England and was initially buried in the cemetery of the Greek royal family in Tatoi. In May 2013, it was exhumed and their bones transferred to Serbia, where they have since rested at her husband's side in the royal tomb of Oplenac. The burial of the remains of Alexandra and Peter II was held on 26 May 2013.
