Alexandre do Nascimento

Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento ( born March 1, 1925 in Malanje, Angola ) is Emeritus Archbishop of Luanda.

Life

Alexandre do Nascimento attended the seminars in Banglas, Malanje and Luanda, he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome and moved in 1948 to the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he earned a licentiate in theology and Catholic on December 20, 1952 Luigi Cardinal Traglia received the sacrament of Holy Orders.

In 1953 he returned to Angola and worked from 1953 as professor of dogmatic theology at the seminary of Luanda, as editor of the local Catholic newspaper O Apostolado and co-responsible for Rádio Ecclesia. In addition, he was pastor for dockers and wrote sermons for the Cathedral of Luanda. From 1961 to 1971 he worked as a priest in Lisbon, Portugal, where he also attended seminars at the law school. In 1971 he became Secretary General of Caritas in Angola and President of the Ecclesiastical Court of Luanda. Also, he taught moral theology at the local Department of Social Work.

1975 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Malanje. He received his episcopal consecration on 31 August 1975, the Apostolic Delegate for Angola, Archbishop Giovanni De Andrea. Two years later, Alexandre do Nascimento Archbishop of Lubango. During a pastoral visit, he was kidnapped in October 1982 by guerrilla forces and released a month later.

Pope John Paul II took Alexandre do Nascimento on 2 February 1983 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco in Agro Lauren Tino in the College of Cardinals to. In 2001 he passed the line of the Archdiocese of Luanda, which he headed since 1986, down from age.
