Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps

Alexandre- Gabriel Decamps ( March 3, 1803 in Paris, † August 22, 1860 ) was a French painter.

Life

Decamps was a pupil of the painter Alexandre Abel de Pujol and Eugène Delacroix. Decamps soon found his style, but was inspired by Delacroix to paint influence "en pleine air". At 24, Decamps 1827 undertook a year-long study trip to Constantinople Opel and Asia Minor, where he found his subjects in the local folk life. Many sketches and watercolors which Decamps brought back from this trip, served as a template for paintings, which arose in the course of the next few years.

Among many other works, excelled Decamps at home with the scenes "The Turkish Guard " (1834 ), "The playing with a turtle Children " (1836 ) and "The spectators at an execution " (1839 ). Alongside he concentrated especially on observation of animal life, especially with his ironic characterization, then parodic creations, especially in groups of monkeys, led. his monkey as a musician, as cooks, as a baker, a butcher, a painter show a dramatic satire of human physiognomy. most successful of his monkey images was a snappy but witty satire against academic jury of the Paris Salon, to its annual art exhibitions not very often admitted his pictures.

His play with light and color used Decamps even in his depictions of the French countryside. In its historical ( " The Siege of Clermont " ) and its religious ( " The Joshua's victory over the Ammonites " ), however, shows that this lacked the vibrancy of the earlier genre scenes. The charcoal drawings of landscapes, however, win its charm due to the simplicity of the presentation.

In his last years discovered Decamps for the parks of Palace of Fontainebleau, which he visited regularly to paint. In the forest of Fontainebleau Decamps was also his tragic end. On the occasion of a royal Parforcejagd a horse shied and despite the experienced rider, it could not be calmed down fast enough. At the age of 57 years Alexandre Gabriel Decamps died of his head injuries.
