Alexandre Herculano

Alexandre Herculano de Carvalho e Araujo ( born March 28, 1810 in Lisbon, Portugal, † September 18, 1877 in Vale de Lobos, Portugal) was a Portuguese scholar, historian, writer, storyteller, politician, publisher, poet, and novelist. He is widely regarded as the founder of Portuguese Romanticism.

Life

Alexandre Herculano was born in 1810 in Lisbon and participated early in the fighting against the absolute monarchy, which drove him into exile in England and France for a year. In 1832 he returned from exile. He founded the magazine O Panorama ( 1837-1839 ), who was the leading cultural magazine in Portugal at the time.

From 1840 he was active in politics and became a deputy in the Cortes. His hobby was the formation of policy. At the same time he was appointed director of the Royal Library of Ajuda in the previous year.

His work consists of short stories, novels, poems, and his historical books, which classically show the beginning of the Portuguese romance and made ​​him the leading exponent of Portugal in this area.

Herculano died 1877 in Vale de Lobos as a highly honored man, despite his isolated in the late years of his life and suicide. Despite its prominence given his work has not been translated into German.
