Alexandre-Théophile Vandermonde

Alexandre- Théophile Vandermonde ( born February 28, 1735 in Paris, † January 1, 1796 in Paris) was a French musician, mathematician and chemist.

Vander moon passion was violin playing. The interest in mathematical problems came when he was about 35 years old. Vandermonde dealt among other things with symmetric functions, the solution of cyclic polynomials and took here parts of the Galois anticipated. In addition, he studied the Springer problem in chess. In 1771 he was elected to the Académie des sciences.

Named after him is the Vandermonde matrix, a special form of a matrix.
