Alexandros Diomidis

Alexandros Diomidis Kyriakos - (Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Διομήδης - Κυριακός; Albanian Aleksandër Diomidi Qiriako, * 1875, † November 11, 1950 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and Prime Minister from 1949 to 1950.

Life

Diomidis came from a arvanitischen family. 1912 to 1914 he was already one of the Liberal government of Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos as finance minister. After the First World War, he retired from active politics.

In 1923 he was elected Governor of the National Bank, which was the Bank to issue currency at that time. Diomidis acted accordingly from significant public bonds and led negotiations that led in 1928 to the founding of the Bank of Greece as a bank for currency issue next. In 1930 he retired from public life back again.

Shortly before the Second World War, he was honorary president of the Supreme Economic Council, and since 1945 President of the Supreme Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority. On January 20, 1949, he joined the coalition government of Themistocles Sophoulis in as non-partisan Deputy Prime Minister. After the death of Sophoulis he was finally himself on June 30, 1949 Prime Minister. On January 5, 1950, he resigned from this post and died in Athens 11 months later.
