Alexei Cherepanov

Alexei Andreyevich Cherepanov (Russian Алексей Андреевич Черепанов; scientific transliteration Alexei Andreevič Čerepanov; born January 15, 1989 in Osjorki, Altai Krai, Russian SFSR, † October 13, 2008 in Chekhov, Russia) was a Russian ice hockey player. During his career he played for the junior and senior teams of HK Avangard Omsk, most recently in the Kontinental Hockey League, on the position of the right winger. He was considered one of the most promising talents of the Russian League.

Career

Cherepanov was playing in youth HK Avangard Omsk for where he already proved by two very good seasons in which he scored 147 points during 55 games his talent. After a few appearances for the second team of professionals from Avangard in the third Russian League he made his debut during the 2006/07 season in the Super League, scoring in his first season more points than the Russian NHL professionals Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin in their debut seasons. He represented his native Russia at the U20 World Championships in 2007 in Sweden. Cherepanov was regarded as one of the five most promising candidates for the NHL Entry Draft in 2007, but was selected only at position 17 of the New York Rangers.

With a Russian U-20 selection, he joined in August in the Super Series 2007 against a Canadian U20 National Team, but had already left the series due to a concussion after two of eight games.
