Alexei Yegorov (ice hockey b. 1975)

Alexei Yegorov (Russian: Алексей Егоров; born May 21, 1975 in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, † 2 March 2002 ) was a Russian ice hockey player. During his career, the winger among other things for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League and the Schwenningen Wild Wings in the German Ice Hockey League was active.

Career

Yegorov first played from 1992 to 1995 in his hometown of St. Petersburg SKA Saint Petersburg. After being selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 in the third round to 66th position by the San Jose Sharks, he moved during the 1994/95 season to North America.

There he played for the rest of the year in the Central Hockey League for the Fort Worth Fire. In the season 1995/96 the Russian was first appointed to the NHL squad. Yegorov was the first player in the North American hockey history, who had managed to jump directly from the CHL to the NHL. In his first game he scored his first career point with a Torvorbereitung, and few days later he managed a hat-trick. Overall, he was able to achieve five points in nine games. Also in the 1995/96 season he ran twice for the Sharks, but was mostly in the former farm team, the Kansas City Blades and Kentucky Thoroughblades used.

After the 1997/98 season Yegorov returned to Russia. With Torpedo Yaroslavl and his tribe club SKA St. Petersburg he went on in a season for two different teams.

For the season 1999 /00 Yegorov moved back to North America after he was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the expansion draft. This time he played in the unterklassigen United Hockey League for the Adirondack IceHawks and the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the International Hockey League, but did not make the leap back into the NHL. For this reason, the winger moved to the 2000/01 season to the Schwenningen Wild Wings in the German Hockey League.

Yegorov died on 2 March 2002 at the age of 26 years by an overdose of drugs.
