Alexei Yuryevich Smirnov

Alexei Smirnov Jurjewitsch (Russian Алексей Юрьевич Смирнов, cited in English as Alexei Smirnov, born October 16, 1951) is a Russian theoretical physicist who deals with neutrino physics.

Life

Smirnov graduated from the Lomonosov University in Moscow, where in 1974 he graduated. From 1977 he worked at the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (INR ), where he received his doctorate in 1979 ( candidates work, he received in 1989 his Russian doctorate ). 1982 to 1990 he also taught at the Moscow State University physics. In 1992, he was also at the International Center of Theoretical Physics ( ICTP ) in Trieste, where he has been a permanent member since 1997 and today is a Principal Research Scientist.

Smirnov is known for his explanation of the riddle of the solar neutrino 1984/5 with Mikheyev, building on earlier ideas of Lincoln Wolfenstein (1978), which bears their name MSW effect. He explains the mystery of the missing in the observations neutrinos from the Sun with neutrino oscillations, which are enhanced by interaction with matter ( electrons).

In 2006 he was awarded with Mikheyev and Wolfenstein the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize and in 2004 was Humboldt Research Fellow. In 2008 he received the Sakurai Prize with Mikheyev. In 2007 he was Schrödinger professor in Vienna and 2002 Biedenharn professor at the University of Texas at Austin.2008 he received the Markov price.
