Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow

Saint Alexius (also Alexi or Alexy, Russian Алексий, * before 1296 in Moscow, † February 12, 1378 ) was the Metropolitan of Kiev and since 1354 of Moscow and All Russia.

Alexius is the Latinized form of the Orthodox Klerikalnamens Alexi ( the Church Slavonic form of the Russian forename Alexei, Russian Алексей ).

Life

Was born of a saint venerated under the name of Alexius Elephtherios as the son of Russian princes Fyodor Biakont, a boyar from Chernigov, who settled in Moscow and the great boyar Pleschtschejew founded.

1313 he took the monastic vows in Epiphany Monastery in Moscow. During this time, received the Medal Name Alexius was given. To 1333 he joined the household of the Metropolitan Theognostus on ( 1328-1353 ). 1340 Alexius was appointed Members of the metropolitans in Vladimir and consecrated bishop of Vladimir twelve years later.

Alexius was also an author of several sermons and epistles. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1448 and is revered as one of the patron saints of Moscow. His relics were built by him in the Alexiuskirche in the former Chudov Monastery ( Russian монастырь Чудов, also Alexius ' Archangel Michael Monastery ) of the Moscow Kremlin worshiped.
