Alfio Basile

Alfio Rubén Basile ( born 1 November 1943 in Bahía Blanca, Argentina ) is a former Argentine football player and current football coach. From 1991 to 1994 and from 2006 to 2008 he was manager of the Argentine national football team.

Playing career

Basile began his career at Club Bella Vista in his hometown. From 1964 to 1970 he played for Racing Club and then for CA Huracán. In its clubs Basile won the 1966 Campeonato Argentino, 1967, the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 1973 and the Campeonato Metropolitano. He finished his playing career in 1975.

Coaching career

After his career end Basile coached several Argentine teams, including Rosario Central, Racing Club (1988 winning the Supercopa Sudamericana ) and CA Huracán. He also coached Atlético Madrid in Spain. 1991 and 1993 he won with the Argentine national football team twice in the Copa América. Later he trained, among others, the Boca Juniors with whom he was very successful and in addition to two national titles in 2005, the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana in 2005 and 2006 won. In July 2006 he was Argentine football coach again. After two years, he announced his retirement in October 2008 and was replaced by Diego Maradona.
