Alfonsine

Alfonsine is a municipality with 12,338 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Ravenna. The economy is dominated by agriculture and industry. In the municipality there are reserves of natural gas. The name probably comes from Alfonso Calcagnini who encouraged the cultivation of the tract of land. There is also the suggestion that the name of the fossa ( trench ) is derived.

In the winter of 1944/45, was the scene of fierce fighting between Alfonsine the German Wehrmacht, the partisans and allies at the end of the city was destroyed to 70 percent. Particularly affected was the historic center. This was first largely destroyed by Allied bombs and then by the German mines. To allow further future expansion of the city and neighboring communities because the original position had extremely narrowed, the center on the opposite bank of the Senio was rebuilt.

The plans were drawn by Giuseppe Vaccaro (architect).

For their suffering during the war, the city received the Medal of Valor (Italy).
