Alfonso Arau

Alfonso Arau ( born January 11, 1932 in Mexico City) is a Mexican actor, producer and director.

Arau is considered one of the most successful contemporary filmmakers in Mexico, both in front of and behind the camera. After his training under Seki Sano and Étienne Decroux and Jacques Lecoq in Paris, he moved 1964 to 1968 with the pantomime show Happy Madness through the world.

In his first film, El águila Descalza (English: The Barefoot Eagle, in German as: " The Barefoot Eagle" ) of 1969, he was active as an actor and as a director. In Germany he became famous in the film adaptation of Laura Esquivel 's novel Como agua para chocolate from 1994. His most recent production Zapata (2004) came to very different assessments of criticism.
