Alfonso IV of Aragon

Alfonso IV of Aragon the Benevolent (* 1299 in Naples, † January 24, 1336 in Barcelona ) was from 1327 until his death King of Aragon and Sardinia.

He was the son and successor of James II and his wife Blanche of Anjou- Naples. Even as Crown Prince Alfonso conquered Sardinia in 1324, that his father was assured by Pope Boniface VIII, after he had renounced Sicily. In order to secure the conquest, led as King Alfonso war with Genoa, to he allied himself with King James III. of Mallorca. He married 1314 Teresa d' Entença ( 1300-1327 ), Countess of Urgell and heiress, daughter of Gombaldo, Baron Entença.

Alfons was later sickly and turned to religion. He fell completely under the influence of his second wife, Eleanor, daughter of Ferdinand IV of Castile. Because donations to Eleonore he came with the stands in dispute in which he was defeated. He got his nickname because of his lavish indulgence. He died in 1336 of dropsy.

From his first marriage he had the following children:

  • Jacob (1321-1347), Count of Urgell ∞ 1336 Cecilia de Comminges
  • Isabel (1323-1327)
  • Friedrich ( * 1325 ), died young
  • Sancho (1326-1327)

From his second marriage Alfonso had two sons:

  • Ferdinand (1329-1363), Marques de Tortosa ∞ 1354 Maria of Portugal
  • Johann (1331-1358), Lord of Elche ∞ 1354 Isabel Nuñez de Lara
