Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio

Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio ( born March 13, 1959 in Salerno ) is an Italian politician. He was from May 2006 to May 2008 Environment Minister in the cabinet of Romano Prodi.

Biography

Pecoraro Scanios political career began in 1985 with the election to the council of his hometown of Salerno. He was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies and at the same time and in the council of Naples in 1992.

In the second government of Giuliano Amato Pecoraro Scanio was from April 2000 to June 2001 Minister for Agriculture. Since December 2001 he has been President of the Italian Federazione dei Verdi Party, which is part of the center-left coalition of Romano Prodi. From 17 May 2006 to May 8, 2008 Pecoraro Scanio was environment minister in the second government of Romano Prodi.

Because of the ongoing for 14 years rubbish crisis in Naples Pecoraro Scanio stands next to Antonio Bassolino, President of the Campania Region, and other government and local politicians in the public criticism. One of introduced by the opposition and by former members of the government camp ( Dini, Mastella ) supported censure motion against him in the Senate did not come off on 23 January 2008, as the vote of confidence in the overall Prodi government was ordered the next day.

On 4 April 2008, the Italian prosecutor against Pecoraro Scanio opened for corruption and suspected involvement in a criminal organization an official investigation. The suspected cases relate to alleged favors in connection with the award of government contracts for waste management in the Campania region.

Pecoraro Scanio known in 2000 publicly as bisexual. His younger brother Marco Pecoraro Scanio is a former footballer in the Italian Serie A and sat from 2006 to 2008 as the representative of the Federazione dei Verdi in the Italian Senate.
