Alfonso Portillo

Alfonso Antonio Portillo Cabrera (* September 24 1951 in Zacapa ) is a Guatemalan politician. He was 2000-2004 President of Guatemala.

Life

After studying economics at the Autonomous National University of Mexico and the law and social sciences, he then worked in various Latin American universities as a lecturer. 1991 to 1994 he was Director General of the national monetary authority, both from 1992, the Institute of Social and Political Studies ( IGESP ).

He joined the Christian Democratic Party at ( PDCG ) and was its general secretary from 1992 to 1994. In 1994 he was a deputy in the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala and Group Chairman. Due to a rift with the party leadership, he left in 1995 PDCG and joined the right-wing Republican Front of Guatemala ( FRG) Efraín Ríos Montt the former president at.
