Alfred Aho

Alfred Vaino Aho ( born August 9, 1941 in Timmins, Ontario, Canada ) is a Canadian computer scientist.

From 1997 to 2002 he was Vice President of the Computing Sciences Research Center of Bell Labs, where he was primarily responsible for the software development. He was then Lawrence Gussman Professor of computer science at Columbia University.

Aho received his bachelors degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science at Princeton University. He has published more than 60 technical papers and writings on computer algorithms, data structures, databases, and compilers. He is also co-developer of the programming language awk and the Aho - Corasick algorithm in 1975, and first author of the Unix egrep and fgrep tools.

In 2003 he was awarded for his contributions to the foundations of computer science and the fields of algorithms and software technology, the John von Neumann Medal of the IEEE.
