Alfred Baum (composer)

Alfred Wood ( born September 23, 1904 in Zurich, † 30 September 1993 in Wallisellenstrasse ) was a Swiss composer, pianist and organist.

Life

Alfred tree was born in Zurich, the son of an orchestra musician the music hall and studied there at the Conservatory of Music Organ at Ernst Isler (1879-1944), piano with Walter Frey (1898-1985) and composition with Volkmar Andreae ( 1879-1962 ). Further studies were carried out in Germany for organ Alfred Sittard (1878-1942), organist at Hamburg Michaelis Church.

  • From 1923 to 1980 he was organist at the ref. Neumünster Church in Zurich
  • From 1929 to 1969 he worked as a lecturer in piano at the Winterthur Conservatory (now the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK)
  • From 1946 to 1976 he taught as a professor of piano and chamber music at the Conservatory of Zurich (now Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK)

During his long teaching activities as a pianist at the conservatories of Winterthur and Zurich trained Alfred tree numerous musicians, many of whom have established themselves in the Swiss music scene later.

Significance and factory

Alfred tree belongs to Walter Schulthess (1894-1971), Paul Muller- Zurich (1898-1993), Robert Blum (1900-1994), Adolf Brunner (1901-1992), Huldreich Georg Früh (1903-1945), Ernst Hess ( 1912-1968), Hugo Pfister (1914-1969), Hermann Haller (1914-2002), Armin Schibler (1920-1986) and Franz Hauser table (* 1921) to a group Zurich composer of the 20th century.

Tree combines in his works on the one hand diatonic with rich chromaticism, on the other hand, he maintains the tradition-conscious late-Romantic heritage. Mostly he used fine jazz elements.

A focus of his work numerous organ works, which arose in the course of his 57 -year-old organist activity at Zurich Neumünster.

The instrumental concertos and chamber music works with surprise partly unusual occupations. The Concerto for Trumpet, Piano, small drum and string orchestra ( comp. 1956/60/61/66 ) could be described as a counterpart to Dmitri Shostakovich's Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra in C minor, Op 35 ( comp. 1933).

1940-1945 set to music several poems by Wilhelm Busch tree in the chanson style, which he performed with his wife Dora Tree Maag ( 1909-1991 ).

An original chamber music piece is the "Dance Suite " for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano which emerged after images of the painter and graphic artist Walter Jonas.

Several works were printed during his lifetime. His extensive estate with numerous manuscripts located in the Central Library Zurich.
