Alfred C. Harmer

Alfred Crout Harmer ( born August 8, 1825 German Town, Pennsylvania, † March 6, 1900 ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1875, and again from 1877 to 1900, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Alfred Harmer was born on August 8, 1825 in German Town, now a district of Philadelphia. He attended the common schools and the German Town Academy. He then worked as a shoemaker. Later, he was also active in the trade. Harmer also engaged in the railroad business and the coal trade. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1856 and 1860 he sat on the city council of Philadelphia; and from 1860 to 1863, he served as Recorder of Deeds Clerk of there.

In the congressional elections of 1870, Harmer was in the fifth electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Caleb Newbold Taylor on March 4, 1871. After a re-election he was able to initially complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875. In 1874, he was defeated by Democrat John Robbins. In the elections of 1876 Harmer was re-elected in the fifth district of his state in Congress, where he replaced Robbins again on March 4, 1877. After eleven elections he could remain until his death on March 6, 1900 U.S. House of Representatives. During this time, including the Spanish-American War was from 1898.
