Alfred Karindi

Alfred Karindi ( until 1935 Alfred Karafin; * 17 Maijul / May 30 1901greg in the village Kõnnu, today Ongassaare village, rural municipality Illuka, Estonia, .. † April 13, 1969 in Tallinn) was an Estonian composer and organist.

Life and work

Alfred Karindi was from 1921 to 1927 worked as a music teacher in a primary school in Tartu. Incidentally studied until 1927 at the Higher Music School in Tartu Heino Eller and composition with up to 1931 as the External compartments organ and composition at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Theatre and Music Academy ). He first worked from 1925 to 1928 as a teacher at the Higher Music School in Tartu, then from 1928 to 1932 at the University of Tartu. In addition, he worked in Tartu and Tallinn as an organist. From 1940 to 1950 he was a lecturer in music theory and organ at the State Tallinn Conservatory in 1946 with the title of professor.

After the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1950 Karindi was arrested. By 1954, he was detained in Mordovia, before he could return to his homeland. In 1956 he was rehabilitated in the course of de-Stalinization. From 1955 until his death in 1969 he was able to work as a professor of music in Tallinn again.

Alfred Karindi has directed famous Estonian choirs in his life. 1947 and 1965 he conducted at the Estonian song festivals. Above all, he is but became known as a composer of many choral pieces in Estonia today enjoy great popularity. In addition, he composed, inter alia, a symphony (1948 ), four organ and two piano sonatas.

Alfred Karindi is the father of the Estonian actor and theater director Jüri Karindi ( b. 1942 ).
