Alfred Kirchhoff

Alfred Kirchhoff ( * May 23, 1838 in Erfurt, † February 8, 1907 in Mockau ) was a German geographer.

Life

After graduating from high school, Kirchhoff studied at the University of Bonn Natural Sciences and moved to Jena later. In 1861 he finished his studies with a doctorate.

Then Kirchhoff worked at several high schools. In 1865 he was transferred to the Industrial School in Berlin. In 1871 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Military Academy, where he became a lecturer in geography. Two years later he was promoted to full professor and served as such in Halle ( Saale).

1878 took him the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina on as a full member. From this time, Kirchhoff worked increasingly on a reform of school geography lessons. Also for the regional studies, he strengthened himself, and 1887-1904, he served as editor of the research on the German state and folklore.
