Alfred Merz

Alfred Merz (born 24 January 1880 in Perchtoldsdorf in Vienna, † August 16 1925 in Buenos Aires ) was an Austro- German oceanographers.

Life

He studied from 1901 to 1906 history and geography at the University of Vienna. After studying Merz was appointed in 1910 to the Institute of Marine Science in Berlin ( German Reich), where he began the physical exploration of the seas. In 1911 he undertook research trips to the South Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. He then devoted himself to the preparation of the German Atlantic Expedition, which was conducted from 1925 to 1927. Merz was in spite of his poor health until his death in charge of the expedition on the survey and research vessel Meteor. The expedition was conducted under the direction of Georg Wüst und Fritz spit over. He is buried in his birthplace Perchtoldsdorf.

Appreciation

The Merz Peninsula on the east coast of Palmer Land is named in his honor.
