Alfred Nzo (English Alfred Nzo District Municipality ) is located in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. Covering an area of 7870 km ² live 801 344 inhabitants (as of 2011). The capital city is Mount Ayliff.
Named the district is named after the former ANC Secretary General Alfred Nzo (1925-2000), who was also from 1994 to 1999 South African foreign minister. The district is one of the poorest in South Africa. About 24 percent of the population are HIV- infected.
Communities
The district consists of the four municipalities Umzimvubu ( administrative seat of Mount Ayliff ), Matatiele ( administrative seat Matatiele ), Mbizana and Ntabankulu. Mbizana and Ntabankulu belonged until 2011 to the district OR Tambo.
