Alfred Poell

Alfred Poell ( born March 18, 1900 in Linz on the Danube; † 30 January 1968 in Vienna ) was a Viennese opera singer (baritone ).

Life

Before his appointment as professional opera singer, he studied in Innsbruck and Vienna medicine, a study which he completed successfully. During this time he joined the fraternities Corps Gothia Innsbruck and Vienna Alemannia Corps.

His debut as a singer, he had in 1929 at the Düsseldorf Opera, where he was working for a decade. In 1940 he went to the Vienna State Opera, where he remained until the end of his career. He became internationally known for his appearances at La Scala, Covent Garden and at the Paris Opera, especially in pieces by Mozart. He also appeared at the Salzburg Festival. Milestones in particular the performances in Mozart's Don Giovanni (1950), in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (1950), in Mozart's Idomeneo (1952) and Le nozze di Figaro (1952 ), in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz (1954 ), in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss ( 1954), as well as in Der Rosenkavalier, also Strauss, ( 1960). He was also active as a lieder singer.

Alfred Poell is on the Hernalser cemetery in Vienna ( group 13, Number 27) buried.
