Alfred Schmidt (weightlifter)

Alfred Schmidt ( born May 1, 1898 in Riisipere; † November 5, 1972 in Tallinn, Soviet Union) was an Estonian weightlifter.

Sports Performance

Alfred Schmidt won at the Olympic Summer Games in Antwerp in 1920 after the Belgian Frans De Haes the silver medal in the featherweight ( 60 kg). He achieved this in a three-way battle, which consisted of one-arm snatch, single-arm bumping and pushing beidarmigen, 210 kg ( 55-65-90 ). Schmidt was then 22 years old.

1922 Schmidt was Estonian champion in weightlifting. At the world championships in the same year in Tallinn Schmidt was disqualified because he weighed too much 200 grams.

Besides his career as a weightlifter Alfred Schmidt was also active as a referee in wrestling.

In the course of Estnisierung by first and last name in Estonia during the interwar period he was called from 1936 Ain Sillak. After the Second World War, he was employed by the Soviet power companies Tallinngaas.
