Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski

Alfred von Wierusz -Kowalski ( born October 16, 1849 in Suwalki ( Poland); † February 15, 1915 in Munich) was a Polish painter of the Munich school.

His childhood was spent Alfred von Kowalski - Wierusz on an estate in Suwalki, a town in what was then Russian Poland. He studied at the academies in Warsaw ( 1868), Dresden ( 1869) and Prague, from 1873 in the class of the Hungarian painter Alexander von Wagner at the Academy in Munich, where he settled, and in 1876 the Munich Poland circle around Józef Brandt joined.

Frequently varied motifs of his works were drawn sleigh rides and horse teams, pursued by wolves or sled hungry wolves in ambush. A major work is the 10 m wide and 5 m high colossal painting "attack by wolves ," which was issued in 1910 in the old town hall in Munich and discussed as a sensation in the press.

Clear contouring and glowing color of snow landscapes are characterized its of vibrant images.

A number of paintings are by the pseudonym " J. Konarski " signed, however, the characteristic image structure and brushwork leave little doubt as to the authorship.
