Alfred Xuereb

Alfred Xuereb ( born October 14, 1958 in Victoria on the Maltese island of Gozo) is the first private secretary of Pope Francis and since 2014 Secretary General of the Vatican Secretariat of Economy.

Life

Xuereb studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Malta. After his ordination in 1984, he completed doctoral studies at the Pontifical Teresianum, where he in 1989 with a dissertation on the topic The Paschal Mystery in the Christian life. Biblical, liturgical and theological- spiritual outlook in light of the teachings of Vatican II to Dr. theol. doctorate.

He then returned to the pastoral service to his country, but was appointed in 1991 as secretary to the Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome again. From 1995 he worked in the Secretariat of State of the Roman Curia in the Vatican. Since 2000, he finally knew service in the Prefecture of the Papal Household. Pope John Paul II awarded him on 9 September 2003 the title of Pontifical honorary prelate.

Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him in 2007 as the successor of Mieczysław Mokrzycki for the second private secretary next Georg Gänswein. Since then, he accompanied the Pope on his travels. Xuereb was admitted to the Order of Malta, 2009.

After the election of Pope Francis, he was in 2013 the first private secretary.

On November 28, 2013, Pope Francis appointed as his personal liaison to the two papal commissions for the Vatican financial institution IOR or the financial management of the Holy See.

On March 3, 2014, he was appointed by Pope Francis as Secretary-General of the new economy Vatican Secretariat.
