Alfredo Baquerizo

Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno ( born September 28, 1859 in Guayaquil, † March 20, 1951 in New York) was an Ecuadorian politician and from 1 September 1916 to the August 31, 1920 President of Ecuador.

Life

The study of literature, history, art history and music at the Conservatorio Nacional in Guayaquil he graduated with a doctorate and then worked as a writer and literary critic. As the owner of a Chair of Literary Studies at the Colegio Vicente Rocafuerte in Guayaquil, he began to engage in politics and was elected a little later as mayor of his hometown.

Political career

In 1903, he was Foreign Minister and simultaneously perceived the office as ambassador to the United States. In 1906 he left the government and went as ambassador first to Cuba, then to Colombia, finally as ambassador to Peru. In 1909 he was elected to the Senate and took over in 1912, the Office of the Senate President. The presidential elections in 1916, he won with 93.6 % of the vote and served for one term as president Equadors. Until 1931, he still was a member of the Senate and was active in the public life of his native country.

Others

During his tenure, the beginning of the scheduled settlement of the Galapagos Islands falls. To him, the newly founded capital of San Cristobal was named as Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in honor.
