Alfredo Marceneiro

Alfredo Marceneiro, actually Alfredo Rodrigo Duarte ( born February 25, 1891 in Lisbon, † June 26, 1982 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese fado singer.

Life

His father was a shoemaker. Alfredo joined in 1908 for the first time publicly, was already 20 years a relatively well-known fado singers and learned the great Fadisten his time know. Over thirty years, this was only a sideline; his livelihood he earned as a ship's carpenter. As in the Second World War, the working hours were extended to twelve hours a day, he took part in a strike, left the shipyard and only worked as a singer. Alfredo had modest artist name Marceneiro - the carpenters - where he sang in his song O Marceneiro (Text Armando Neves ) that he really only so justly zimmere his songs.

In truth, he was one of the major singers of fado tradition, certainly knew of its value: Normally Fado was carried forward in restaurants, where a lot of noise was. If Alfredo was too loud, he stopped singing and stomped her foot briefly, then there was silence. He sang in a high voice, mostly in falsetto, about the life of ordinary people. In Lisbon of his time, his popularity was second to none. He was proclaimed at an event in 1948 in the presence of Amália Rodrigues Fado and other greats as King of Fado.

Alfredo Marceneiro is considered the conveyor Amália Rodrigues helped to success. Contrary to her his fame was limited locally. From Dictatorship he remained unmolested, he did not curried in and was left as a pure fado artist at rest. The recordings obtained from him document the classic Fado without adaptation to a mass audience. Alfredo remained active into old age, he appeared for the last time in 1980, with almost ninety years.
