Algae eater

As algae eaters a number of freshwater ornamental fish from the order of carp -like are called, mainly feed on algae. They are often used by aquarists to curb the growth of algae in aquariums (especially on the discs ).

Not all fish that are available under the name algae eaters in the trade, are equally well suited for this task. So eat adult sucking loaches and nice fin algae eaters hardly algae. About species of the genus Garra contrast, there are numerous opinions that suggest that it is indeed good algae eaters with them. Some algae -like organisms such as blue-green algae are in principle not eaten by fish.

  • Species from the family of the sucking loaches ( Gyrinocheilidae )
  • Siamese snout barbel ( Crossocheilus siamensis ), often referred to as Siamese algae eater in trade
  • Glimmerlabeo ( Crossocheilus latius ) is also referred to as Indian algae eaters
  • Schönflossige snout barbel ( Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus ) is also referred to as a nice fin algae eaters
  • Sri Lanka algae eater ( Garra ceylonensis )
  • Indian Algae Eater ( Garra mullya )
  • Thai algae eater ( Garra cambodgiensis )
  • Superb algae eaters ( Garra flavatra )
