Algerian legislative election, 2007

In the parliamentary elections in Algeria in 2007, which took place on May 17, over 20 political parties and 100 independent lists competed with a total of over 12,000 candidates for the 389 seats in the lower house of parliament ( Assemblée populaire nationale). Almost 19 million voters were asked to cast their vote in the more than 42,000 polling stations.

The elections were marred by bomb attacks in advance and took place under tight security accordingly. The Islamic Salvation Front was not allowed to vote, Islamist groups such as the North African al - Qaeda cell called for a boycott of the elections, the most important party in the Berber areas in the northeast of Algeria ( Socialist Forces Front ) boycotted the elections also.
