Algiz

Elhaz or Algiz ( ᛉ ) is the fifteenth rune of the Elder Futhark and the eleventh rune of Norse runic alphabet with the phonetic value for the reconstructed Proto-Germanic name means " moose " and appears in the runic poems as Old Norse yr, Old English ezec eolhx or gothic. To distinguish them from the Madhr rune it is in the Younger Futhark often overthrown used ( ᛦ ).

Name

The actual name of the rune is unclear, since the three source languages they denote different. In Norse runes rune poem is called yr ( ȳ r ), which means " yew ". This name should thus have originally referred to the same significant Ihwa rune missing in the Nordic runic poem. By the late Gothic tradition ezec so far lacks a convincing etymology. As namesake hence the old English variant was chosen eolhx, which is attributed to OE eolh " moose ".

Phonetic value

In the final consonant Primitive Germanic * z denotes the nominative singular masculine. Accordingly, the Elhaz rune occurs only at the end of the word. It is transcribed by the Latin letter z.

In Old Norse, the final consonant is changed to a / r / - sound, which is why the transcription usually ʀ here by the Latin letters (alternatively versales R) takes place.

Use in National Socialism

In " Armanenfuthark ," an invention of the author and nationalist esotericist Guido von List in 1902, the rune is called " Lebensrune " and its inverted counterpart ( a Sturzrune ) as " Death Rune ". These names and their interpretation are purely fictional, while the shape is loosely based on the Elhaz rune. Under the Nazi regime the Lebensrune was used as Lebensborn character and in contrast to the Christian symbolism instead of the usual genealogical sign for the date of birth (*) and in inverted form ( ) for the date of death (†).

Today the " Lebensrune " is used by neo-Nazis: It is one of the symbols of the Allgermanischen Pagan Front and the German Pagan Front.
