Ali Mohamed Shein

Ali Mohamed Shein ( born March 13, 1948 in Chokocho ( Pemba, Zanzibar ) ) is a physician, politician and Vice- President of Tanzania. He is also president of the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.

Life

Study and career

After schooling and basic studies on Lumumba College in Zanzibar and a short stint as assistant to the Deputy First Secretary of the Ministry of Education, he began in 1969 a preparatory study of medicine at the State University of Voronezh, before he in 1970-1975 post-graduate studies at the State University of Odessa the USSR.

After his return to Tanzania, he was in 1976 head of the departments for diagnosis and pathology of the Ministry of Health. Following this, he completed a degree in Medical Biochemistry in 1984 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Newcastle, from which he graduated in 1988 with a Master of Science ( M.Sc.) in Medical Biochemistry. At the same time he obtained his PhD with a dissertation on Inborn errors of metabolism for Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D. ) in the field of clinical biochemistry.

After he had returned to Tanzania in 1989, he took over as a diagnostic specialist again the leadership of the Department of Pathology of the Ministry of Health. In November 1991, he was program manager of the AIDS prevention project of the Ministry of Health and at the same time to July 1995 Advisor to the Ministry of laboratory services, and diagnostics. During this time he was also a member of the Expert Committee of WHO for Africa, the Academic Council of the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, the Advisory Committee of the State Commission for Science and Technology and Secretary of the Research Council of the Ministry of Health.

Political career

In 1966 he became a member of the youth organization ( Youth League ) of the Afro - Shirazi Party (ASP - YL) and started as their secretary for public relations at Lumumba College from January to December 1969 his political career. Previously, he was secretary of the 1968 ASP YL at the Zanzibar Secondary School already for a short time.

In 1969 he became a member of the Afro - Shirazi Party. After the merger with Tanganyika African National Union ( TANU ), the party of the Revolution ( Chama Cha Mapinduzi ), he became its member in 1977 on June 13. He became a member of the Executive Committee of the CCM of Pemba South early on 2 September 1977.

On October 29, 1995, he was appointed by the then President of Zanzibar, a member of the House of Representatives. A few days later, on November 12, 1995, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health. In this role, he was Head of the respective delegations of Tanzania at the World Health Assemblies in Geneva in 1997 and 1999, and the family planning project in Indonesia in 1997.

Shein also was elected on 27 September 1997 Member of the National Executive Committee of CCM and on 6 November 2000 as a member of the House of Representatives, where he represents the constituency of Mkanyageni. On 22 November 2000 his appeal was made to the Minister of State in the President's Office with special responsibility for matters of constitutional and good governance.

After the death of the former Vice President of Tanzania, Omar Ali Juma, on 4 July 2001 he was appointed on 13 July 2001 by President Benjamin William Mkapa to succeed him as Vice President. In May 2005, he renounced his candidacy as president in favor of Foreign Minister Jakaya Kikwete. In December 2005, he was then re-elected in addition to the current President Kikwete as Vice President. As Vice President, he has remained committed to health issues and has been a visiting speaker at the conference of the WHO for non Noticed Tropical Diseases ( Neglected Tropical Diseases ) on 19 April 2007.

After the victory of his party CCM in the internationally monitored and free elections in Zanzibar in November 2010, he assumed the office of President of Zanzibar Amani Abeid Karume of its predecessor.
