Alice Neel

Alice Neel ( born January 28, 1900 in Merion Square, Pennsylvania, † October 13, 1984 in New York) was an American painter who is associated with the American realism.

Life and work

After her graduation in 1918 Alice Neel learned shorthand and typing and completed the examination for the civil service. During her two years as secretary of the Army, she attended evening classes at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia. In 1921 she went to work at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women at (now Moore College of Art and Design). In the first year they played the school fees of their savings, for the remaining three years, she was awarded a state-funded scholarship.

Alice Neel devoted her major work of portraiture, describing their work as "pictures of people" (images of people ). As a self-proclaimed soul collector Neel has been a lifetime endeavor to turn the inside of their models to the outside. A boundless interest in the people gave her a natural talent when it came to analyzing their models. Their approach to portraiture connected these eager perception with a sharp mind, and so created portraits that are open and insightful, if not always flattering to her subject.
