Alice Shalvi

Alice Shalvi (Hebrew אליס שלוי; born 1926 in Essen ) is an Israeli professor of English literature, feminist and peace activist.

Her father emigrated to England in 1933 and was in May 1934 to bring his family. Shalvi studied English Literature at Cambridge University. She earned a B. A. (1947 ), and M.A. (1950 ) and a degree in social work at the London School of Economics, before they emigrated to Israel.

From 1950 to 1990 she taught at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where she received her doctorate in 1962. She founded the Negev in Beersheba University (now Ben-Gurion University of the Negev ) in 1969 the Department of English and was from 1973 to 1976 director of the Institute of Language and Literature at the Hebrew University. In 1990 she became Professor Emeritus.

From 1975 to 1990, she served in a volunteer capacity as chief of a progressive high school for religious girls in Jerusalem. In 1997 she was appointed Rector of the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, which is part of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.

As a feminist and activist for women's issues Alice Shalvi served as founding chairman of Israel Women's Network, an organization that is dedicated to improving the status of women in Israel. Alice Shalvi has won several awards for her work, including in 1989 with the Emil- Grünzweig Human Rights Award. She and her husband Moshe Shalvi have three sons and three daughters.

In 2007 her the Israel Prize was awarded for her life's work.
