Alisanos

Alisanus is the name of a Celtic god who was worshiped in Gaul in the area of today's Burgundy.

Etymology and Locations

The name Alisanus is associated with the Celtic word for " rock " in conjunction. Another possibility would be a connection with the Irish word Luis, the name of a juniper, also it can (now Alise -Sainte -Reine ) be a connection of the god with the name of a river Alisos and as patron god of the Celtic city of Alesia.

Three dedicatory inscriptions for Alisanus were found:

  • In the hamlet Viévy - Visignot ( Roman province Lugdunensis, today Côte-d'Or department ) within the territory of the Aedui
  • In Gevrey- Chambertin ( Côte-d'Or department ) in the field of Lingones near Diviodunum, today Dijon
  • In Arles ( Arelate, Roman Gallia Narbonensis, now the Bouches -du- Rhône) - here the name is only rudimentary recognizable and therefore uncertain
