Alison Gopnik

Alison Gopnik ( born June 16, 1955 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American high school teacher of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. She is known for her research in the field of cognitive and language development, in particular the causal learning and theory of mind. After completing her BA degree in 1975 from McGill University Gopnik earned a Ph.D. in 1980 in Oxford. In 2013 she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

She first worked at the University of Toronto and in 1988 followed the call to Berkeley. From her marriage to George Lewinski she has three sons: the hip-hop jazz fusion musicians Alexei Gopnik - Lewinski aka Lexxx Luthor, Nicholas Gopnik - Lewinski and Andres Gopnik - Lewinski. Alison Gopnik is the oldest of five siblings, including Blake Gopnik, art critic of the Washington Post and Adam Gopnik, a writer for The New Yorker.
