Aljustrel is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 5127 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Aljustrel is a historical place in the Alentejo. He was known in the Roman period Vipasca and later Al- luster among the Moors, of which the present name can be derived. From this time, the ruins of the castle, which has been declared a National Monument in 1992 come. In 1234 was Aljustrel under the king D. Sancho II, recaptured Paio Peres Correia and the Knights of the Order of Santiago, and so it is that Aljustrel is already in 1252 first mentioned in writings and on September 20, 1510 received a city charter.

The following centuries were marked by the Mine degradation globally, also other sites in this area, as Aljustrel part of the Pyrite Belt of südiberischen Peninsula. Today it is no longer clear to determine when the mine began mining in Aljustrel, but it has much to suggest that this was already 3000 years BC. Under the Romans was to 400 AD here mainly copper mined. The industrial mining began in 1849 and today is the time to see the large radius wells, building and construction residues.

On the historical heritage of the place is one the main church of São Salvador, which was built in the 15th century and in the 2 meter thick walls particularly noticeable. In the interior there is a tile painting ( azulejos ) from the 17th century which was produced by Gabriel del Barco.

In the district there are 15 windmills that are produced by and by.

Economy

Since 2004, Lundin Mining Corporation, owner of the Minas de Aljustrel. In response to the rapid fall of the zinc prices on the world market was the production of zinc set in November 2008, even though the mine had only resumed in May 2008, its operation with EU subsidies. The further fate of the mine is still uncertain. For the transport of minerals from this mine from there a own railway connection, the Ramal de Aljustrel.
