Alkaline hydrolysis (death custom)

The alkaline hydrolysis (English Resomation ) is a burial method, in which the corpse to bestattende is hydrolyzed by the action of a strong base.

The procedure

The body is decomposed in a pressure vessel made of stainless steel at temperatures of 150 to 160 ° C in potassium solution within a few hours. In the container thereby a pressure builds up which prevents premature boiling the liquor at lower temperatures. The increased temperature accelerates the hydrolysis of body fats (hydrolysis). Apart from a few bone fragments (calcium phosphate) it remains only a brown, viscous liquid. It is made according to the manufacturer primarily of amino acids, short peptides, sugars and salts. However, you will no longer contain DNA. The resulting liquid can be disposed of in the normal case without concern over the drain. The process should be characterized by a high degree of environmental friendliness.

The cost of a burial with the alkaline hydrolysis are in the U.S. at about 600 U.S. dollars.

Admission

This form of burial is approved in the U.S. states of Minnesota and New Hampshire for the burial of people (as of May 2008). By the summer of 2007, reportedly about 1,000 people were buried in this way in the U.S.. Six other U.S. states have until 2013 approved the form of burial. Moreover, it is applied in the UK, Canada and Australia.
