Alkannin is a dye selected from the alkanet ( Alkanna tinctoria ) is obtained. The dye is used for coloring of food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It turns deep red in greasy, oily environment, violet in a basic environment.
Effect
Alkannin shows antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The drug was used in antiquity as a wound salve and used in recent studies for the treatment of varicose veins. However, efficacy has not been sufficiently established.
Toxicity
Alkannin has a laxative effect and colored urine and feces. There are no negative effects of the substance known.
