Alkyd

Alkyd paints (or short alkyd paints, or colors ) are suitable for wood or metal, both indoors as well as outdoors. Their properties can be set specifically by the basic materials used in the manufacturing process. The term alkyd was introduced in 1927 by RH Kienle and is composed of alcohol and acid together. This " artificial" production as opposed to the more common to date natural resins occur in conjunction with alkyd paints also from synthetic resin.

Basis in the manufacturing process is the esterification of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acids / oils. It is divided into short, medium and long oil alkyd resins and beyond drying and non - drying alkyd resins. Drying alkyd resins are used in the DIY sector as a classical painter paint. The non-drying alkyd resins are the basis for systems in which they are reactants (for example, baking finishes in the automotive sector ).

Veresterungspartner as the polyalcohols (e.g., glycerin) and acid anhydrides known oils such as linseed oil, castor oil or olive oil may be used.

To further adapt to the needs of the alkyd resin paints, subjecting them to the so-called modification. Here, more reactants are installed that affect the subsequent crosslinking on Trocknungs-/Härtungsprozess in the desired direction. The last development steps walked toward water-based systems and high-solids coatings.
