Alkylphenol

The alkylphenols are a family of organic compounds which are produced by the alkylation of phenols. The term is commonly used for commercially important alkyl phenols such as Propylphenole, butylphenols, Amylphenole, Hexylphenole, heptylphenols, octylphenols that nonylphenol and dodecylphenols. A distinction is " long-chain alkylphenols " (English Long chain alkyl phenol, LCAPs ) and " short-chain alkylphenols " (English short chain alkyl phenol, SCAPs ). The methyl phenols ( cresols ), the dimethylphenols ( Xylenols ) and ethyl phenols are among the alkylphenols.

The introductions of the group of SCAP done with the aim to distinguish the joint forces in environmental damage cases phenols of other phenols with other properties and from other sources. SCAPs fall for almost all products or by-products from the refining of fossil fuels. They are as much a part of the crude oil and gasoline, but not part of unprocessed coal.

It can be probably up to 3,000 groundwater contamination cases in the EU derive, in which SCAP occur.

Short-chain alkylphenols ( SCAP )

The short-chain alkyl phenols comprise a group of alkyl phenols having up to 3 additional carbon atoms outside of the phenolic backbone as a side chain (s).

Total phenols include 35 of the following sub groups to the SCAP:

  • C0: phenol ( 1 isomer)
  • C1: cresols (3 isomers)
  • C2: dimethylphenols (6 isomers); Ethylphenols (3 isomers)
