Musical

The song is written in A major and consists for the most part of alternating A- flat major and D major chords. Furthermore, The Edge also uses the delay effect, with an echo- like sound of each note can be achieved.

In All I Want Is You, he uses a 425 -ms delay, which is not conspicuously matches the tempo of the song, which is 94 bpm. This is very unusual as The Edge normally uses a 3/16tel delay, which would have corresponded to 484 ms in this case. This echo would have been but delayed so that it no longer matches the original note in conjunction could bring. Therefore, The Edge chose this somewhat shorter delay. The use of the delay effect explained The Edge so that it allows him an unlimited variety of musical structures.

In addition, Bono's vocals are provided with a delay effect, which is 125 ms.

For the recording of the song of the American musician Van Dyke Parks arranged a string orchestra.

The music video

The music video was filmed and directed by Meiert Avis on April 18, 1989 in Lido di Ostia, near Rome, as a black and white film. Barry Devlin wrote the script for the video, which is a cinematic approach to the song. The U2 band members immerse themselves only briefly in cameo roles.

At the beginning it was an attempt to shoot a video in which either the band performs with an orchestra, or to try something totally Novel.

The video tells the story of a midget (played by Paolo Risi), located in a trapeze artist (played by Paola Rinaldi ) in love. The funeral scene at the end of the video led to discussions between fans who had died. In a television interview with The Edge ( MTV Europe, MTV 's Greatest Hits, November 11, 1991) of the U2 guitarist explained that the trapeze artist had died in the video.

In an interview, Bono said about the video:

In addition added The Edge added:

The video is a tribute to Federico Fellini, who to his last film, The Voice of the Moon (La voce della luna ) was rotating synchronously only a few miles from the location of the music video. It is also an homage to Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks published.

Reviews

Rolling Stone: Rattle and Hum calms down to a conclusion with the ballad All I Want Is You, a touching representation of unsatisfied desire which is accompanied with an eloquent String Orchestra lineup of Van Dyke Parks.

The Boston Globe: All I Want Is You decide the LP with a glorious end, with Van Dyke Parks string orchestra, which promoted the song in the Rock ' n ' Roll Heaven. If the notes fade away, the realization is clear: No rock group has remained so true to their origin on the one hand, and has been on the other side so strikingly developed like this.
