History

Emerged the ANPP is from the All People's Party, which experienced a factional split after an election defeat in 1999. In the disputed parliamentary elections in April 2003 it reached 27.5 % of the vote and won 96 of 360 seats in the House of Representatives and 27 of the 109 Senate seats. The election campaign was overshadowed by, among others, the murder of the ANPP Vice Chairman Chief Marshall Harry on March 5. In taking place in the same year presidential elections its candidate, the former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari defeated with 32.2 % of the vote against former President Olusegun Obasanjo of the People's Democratic Party. Buhari then described the election because of numerous manipulation of evidence as " a joke " and challenged the result.
