Allan Ramsay (artist)

Allan Ramsay ( born October 13, 1713 Edinburgh, † August 10 1784 in Dover ) was a Scottish portrait painter. He is the oldest son of writer Allan Ramsey.

Life

Ramsay's first at the Swedish painter Hans Huyssing in London and then worked for three years in Rome. After his return he first worked in Edinburgh. In 1757 he painted a portrait by the then Prince of Wales, later George III. , Which he was known among the nobility increasingly as a portrait painter. In 1762 he moved to London and in 1767 appointed court painter to the ruling since 1760 George III. appointed.

Ramsay was tasked by working as a court painter. It secured him a steady income, but left him little time for other works than portraits. Even his style as a painter, he was able to develop hardly. To be able to do the volume of work, he resorted to the help of assistants.

Ramsay's career ended when he in 1773 in an accident injured his right arm.
