Allegan County, Michigan

Allegan County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Allegan.

Geography

The County is located in the southwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the west by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​4748 square kilometers, of which 2143 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ottawa County, Kent County, Barry County, Kalamazoo County and Van Buren County.

History

Allegan County was formed in 1831 from parts of Barry County and free territory. As of 1835 it had a government. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.
