Allegheny River at East Brady, Pennsylvania

The Allegheny River ( also Alleghany River, O- hee - yo or O -hi -o) is the true source of the river Ohio River in the eastern United States.

Its sources are located in Potter County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. From there, it flows in a northwesterly direction through the State of New York and back to Pennsylvania. At Point State Park in Pittsburgh arises from the Allegheny along with the Monongahela River to the Ohio River, which then flows into the Mississippi River.

The Allegheny 523 km long, of which 110 km are navigable between Pittsburgh and East Brady.

The water flowing down the Allegheny River exceeds 559 m³ / s of the Monongahela River ( 358 m³ / s; qv) clearly, so he is the main source of the river Ohio. Since the Ohio at the confluence with the Mississippi River is the significantly larger ( average discharge: 7,973 m³ / s compared to 5,865 m³ / s), the Allegheny is hydrologically even the headwaters of the Mississippi River system.
