Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 33

Only to you, Lord Jesus Christ, ( BWV 33) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote the chorale cantata in 1724 for the 13th Sunday after Trinity, and led them on 3 September 1724 on. It is based on the eponymous hymn by Conrad Hubert ( 1540).

History and words

Bach composed the cantata in his second year in Leipzig for the 13th Sunday after Trinity. In this year he wrote a series of chorale cantatas. The prescribed readings for the Sunday were from 3.15 to 22 Gal LUT Paul on "Law and Promise," and Luke 10.23-37 LUT, the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The text of an unknown poet is based on the song by Conrad Hubert that was printed in Nuremberg in 1540 with an additional fourth stanza. Each stanza consists of nine lines. The poet maintained the first and the last verse in the text, the two inner verses he composed in each case to a sequence of recitative and aria. The song, whose theme is the repentant sinner, refers only generally to the gospel. The poet deepens the reference in clause 4, "Give me a mercy / the true Christian faith " as well as in sentence 5, " Grant that I / as myself love the neighbor of pure instincts that receives the core set of the gospel.

An anonymous song melody alone to you, Lord Jesus Christ was printed in 1541 in Wittenberg. She was often processed musical, first of Sethus Calvisius, later by Michael Praetorius and others. After Klaus Hofmann was in 1512 by Paul Hofhaimer written for a secular song. In the cantata, Bach uses it as usual in the Choral Fantasy at the beginning and a four -part harmony at the end, he also plays in a duet (set of 5) on them.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is staffed with three vocal soloists ( alto, tenor and bass), four-part choir, two oboes, two violins, viola and basso continuo

Music

In his first year in Leipzig Bach had the same occasion you shall the Lord thy God, love ( BWV 77) composed, beginning with a choral writing about the ultimate commandment of God and neighbor to love, to which, according to the parallel passage in the Gospel of Matthew 22:34-40 LUT, hang the law and the prophets.

The opening chorus of unique to you, Lord Jesus Christ is a chorale fantasy. Using the cantus firmus in the soprano, the lower voices mostly homophonic, sometimes polyphonic, and extensive ritornellos and interludes that frame all nine song lines

In the alto aria ( set 3) " How scary shook my steps " to play the first violins with mutes and the other strings pizzicato to express the fear. The fluctuating steps appear in full figures syncope. Theorem 5, a duet of tenor and bass " God, who is called love " ), represents God's love is in the consonances of sixth - and third - parallels. The final chorale is a four-part set, which interweaves the lower voices in expressive lines.
