Allen Montgomery Lewis

Sir Allen Montgomery Lewis GCMG GCVO, K.St.J (* October 26, 1909, † 18 February 1993) was a lawyer and politician from Saint Lucia, as well as two-time Governor-General of Saint Lucia.

Biography

Lewis studied post-school law and was after graduation worked as a barrister. He also began a political career and was 1943-1951 Member of the Legislative Council of Saint Lucia, before he was in 1950 next to George Charles co-founder and first president of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP).

After the founding of the West Indies Federation on January 3, 1958, he became a member of the Parliament of the Federation, but this was only until 1959. After he was first again as a barrister and then worked from 1962 to 1967 as a judge on the Court of Appeal of Jamaica ( Jamaican Court of Appeal ). Between 1967 and 1972, Lewis was President ( Chief Justice ) of the Supreme Court of the West Indies Associated States, now the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, and afterwards chancellor of the University of the West Indies ( UWI ).

On 5 October 1974 saw his appointment as governor of Saint Lucia. After the sovereignty on 22 February 1979, he was the first governor-general and as such represented the British monarch Elizabeth II to June 19, 1980. Following the resignation of his successor Boswell Williams he followed this up on 13 December 1982 at the Office of the Governor General and held this position until 30 April 1987.

His son Vaughan Allen Lewis was Prime Minister of St. Lucia, between April 1996 and May 1997.
